Main Areas of Focus:
The main area of focus is educational development through the following key programmes:
• School Development :
Working with our partners, we assist schools in acquiring vital resources that are required in order to achieve their educational objectives, these resources include; textbooks, school furniture, science & computer labs etc. Needs for each school vary, that is why we conduct a full needs analysis of each school to find areas where we can best assist.
• Learner Development:
Most learners from underprivileged schools are normally subjected to an inferior standard of education due to low morale in teachers, lack of resources or domestic related issues. These issues normally attribute to learners having low self-esteem, lack of desire for learning etc. We, with the help of our partners, provide learners with additional academic classes where learners can experience an improved standard of education as well as motivational talks to help inspire and improve their desire for learning.
• Career Guidance:
We provide learners with information about the various careers that exist. We also involve industry professionals who we partner with to visit various schools for talks with learners.
• Career Excursions:
Most learners from underprivileged backgrounds tend to make wrong career decisions due to the lack of information about the existence of other careers. In this regard we ensure that learners are exposed to various areas where they can experience the existence of careers, for example; tours to harbours, airports, manufacturing plants, construction sites, etc.
Our Programme:
The Ark Foundation has designed a school development programme aimed at the development of underprivileged schools. This is a unique programme that is implemented in schools classified as quintile 1 (one) -quintile 3 (three) schools which is a classification for no fee schools, we are also expanding our reach to cater for quintile 4 (four) and 5 (five) schools .
The main purpose is to identify areas that are contributing to a low standard of education in these schools. Some of the main causes that have been identified include a shortage of basic resources required for learning, these include lack of stationery, overflow in classrooms attributed to by a shortage of classrooms, malnutrition of pupils, school uniform, career guidance and life skills, etc.
The Ark Foundation aims to address this scourge by assisting these schools to acquire much needed assistance on a continuous basis. By working closely with these schools and our partners, we aim to achieve tangible results which will lead to social and economic development.
Purpose:
Through the implementation of this project, we aim to achieve these key objectives;
• An improved standard of education in our country
• To enhance broad economic participation
• Transformation in the educational sector
• To counteract poverty at the grass-root level
• To improve the matriculation pass rate
• Address the scarce skills shortages in South Africa
• To create a socially harmonious environment
